CABRILLO HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS 10TH ANNUAL WOMEN IN STEM MENTORING EVENT

[LONG BEACH, CA., March 8, 2024] - Cabrillo High School hosted its 10th Annual Women in STEM Mentoring Event on Friday, March 8. The event connected high school female students with professional women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers, providing them with valuable insights and guidance as they consider their future career paths.

Organized by Cabrillo’s Girls into Engineering, Math and Science (GEMS) Club, the event featured a Women Empowerment Symposium and a catered luncheon, allowing students to learn and network with STEM professionals from engineering, biology and computer science fields, among others.

"We are thrilled to host our 10th annual Women in STEM Mentoring Event," said Cabrillo GEMS President Cassandra Mora, a senior at Cabrillo High School and organizer of the event. "This event has been incredibly impactful over the years, inspiring young women to pursue their passions in STEM and providing them with the support they need to succeed. We are grateful to all the professional women who volunteer their time to mentor these students."

In connection with International Women's Day and the United Nations Sustainable Goal of Gender Equality, the event featured one-on-one mentoring sessions, panel discussions and keynote speakers including Cabrillo alum Carley Washington, a professional electrical engineer. Students also engaged in interactive workshops focusing on key issues affecting women's empowerment and gender equality and connected with college representatives on available STEM programs and scholarships.

"We believe that by connecting high school girls with successful women in STEM, we can inspire the next generation of female leaders in these fields," said Kenneth Fisher, lead teacher of Cabrillo High School’s Engineering and Design Career Pathway. "We are committed to providing our students with the resources and support they need to pursue their passions and achieve their goals."
